Garden Manager

Reporting to the Position, the Garden Manager oversees the planning, operation, and maintenance of community gardens, greenhouse programs, and food production spaces. This role leads garden staff, coordinates planting schedules, supports community food initiatives, and ensures the gardens are productive, orderly, and culturally respectful.

We are seeking someone who brings a background in community-based garden management, sustainable food production, and staff leadership, with a deep respect for Indigenous values and stewardship of the land. Experience working with or within First Nations communities, especially in culturally respectful and collaborative environments, is highly valued. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to fostering health, safety, and self-reliance, and be passionate about protecting the natural resources and traditions that sustain current and future generations of the Pacheedaht First Nation.

This is a temporary contract, with the potential to transition into a full-time capacity depending on departmental needs and performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As the Garden Manager for Pacheedaht First Nation, you will carry out the following tasks.

Land & Garden Care

• Plan and oversee seasonal garden activities including planting, harvesting, soil preparation, and maintenance.
• Maintain gardens, greenhouse operations, irrigation systems, and composting areas.
• Monitor plant health and implement pest and disease management using safe practices.
• Ensure gardens are maintained in a safe, accessible, and welcoming condition.

People Support & Participation

• Supervise garden workers and volunteers; provide training and daily task assignments.
• Support youth programming, workshops, or cultural harvesting events as needed.
• Coordinate with community programs (Health, Education, Elders, Daycare, etc.) for garden use.

Community Food Planning

• Develop crop plans aligned with community needs, food programs, or revenue-generating opportunities.
• Track production data and prepare basic reports on yields, maintenance, and needs.

Tools, Resources & Budgeting

• Maintain garden tools, equipment, and inventory of seeds and supplies.
• Manage financial reporting and budgeting quarterly or as required.


Lived and learned experience we are seeking
To be the successful candidate for this position, you will have/demonstrate:

  • Skills Grounded in lived experience: Experience in gardening, horticulture, greenhouse operations, or small-scale agriculture.

  • Knowledge of local climate, soil health, pest management, and sustainable growing methods.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Cultural grounding: Knowledge of Pacheedaht First Nation culture, history and local traditions preferred.

  • Program leadership: Strong organizational and planning skills.

  • People & relationships: Excellent communication, relationship-building, and collaboration skills; skilled in problem solving and conflict resolution.

  • Team supervision: Experience supervising and mentoring staff, with strengths in planning, organizing, and time management preferred.

  • Indigenous experience: Indigenous lived experience and/or significant experience working with Indigenous communities is strongly valued.

  • Certifications & Checks: Valid BC driver’s licence (Class 5; Class 4 preferred) with a clear driver’s abstract.‍ ‍
